On this episode, Matt Pole and Sussex sport guru Steve Bone are joined by one of Sussex’s current promotion hunting managers, Burgess Hill Town joint boss Gary Mansell.Gary’s playing career was not, by his own admission, at the highest level … he was happy to play with his friends in the Brighton & Hove Saturday League Premier Division.His coaching career has seen steady progression, with the majority of his time in youth football. A successful path with a group of players he began with as under-sixes at Mile Oak Wanderers eventually led to a move to Burgess Hill Town with players who were by then U14s, Gary’s role being to develop them further up to U18 level so they could move into senior football.The team were very successful at Burgess Hill and, in December 2023, Gary was given the opportunity to manage the Hillians’ first team. This season he’s had the familiar figure of Jay Lovett working with him in a joint capacity and Burgess Hill are now very close to clinching an Isthmian South East division play-off spot.
