Amidst heavy rainfall leading to significant waterlogging across various parts of the national capital, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal acknowledged that the city's infrastructure was ill-equipped to handle such an extraordinary deluge. During a press conference, he stated that Delhi experienced an unprecedented amount of rainfall, with 153 mm recorded in just 24 hours from July 8 to July 9, the highest in four decades. Kejriwal highlighted that the existing drainage master plan, formulated in 1976 when the city's population was around 6 million, has not been updated despite the population quadrupling since then. He emphasized that this was not a time for blame but rather a realization of the urgent need for a new drainage master plan. Kejriwal also mentioned that the possibility of floods in Delhi depends on the release of water from the Hathnikund barrage upstream of the Yamuna river.
