शास्त्रों के अनुसार माघ मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की अमावस्या तिथि का बहुत महत्व है। इस वर्ष मौनी अमावस्या 21 फरवरी,शनिवार को है। इस अमावस्या तिथि को 'मौनी' कहने के पीछे यह मान्यता है कि इसी पावन तिथि पर मनु ऋषि का जन्म हुआ था और मनु शब्द से इस अमावस्या को मौनी अमावस्या कहा जाने लगा। एक अन्य मान्यता के अनुसार इस दिन मौन रहकर ईश्वर की साधना की जाती है, इसलिए इसे मौनी अमावस्या कहते हैं। इस बार यह तिथि शनिवार को होने के कारण इसका धार्मिक और ज्योतिष महत्व और भी बढ़ जाता है। According to the scriptures, the new moon date of the Krishna Paksha of Magh month is very important.
