Nagaland Civilian Killings: Amit Shah, Home Minister's Statement Amid Opposition Protest

On December 6, Union Home Minister Amit Shah told the Parliament that the centre regretted the killing of 14 civilians in Nagaland. Opposition MPs raised slogans as Shah read out the statement in both Houses of Parliament. They demanded repeal of AFSPA. Shah said, “All agencies have to ensure such incidents do not happen in future.” In the Lok Sabha, Congress, DMK, Samajwadi Party, BSP and the NCP walked out. The Congress had demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi be present for this, but he chose to stay away. Mallikarjun Kharge, leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha had demanded that Amit Shah should make a statement regarding the matter in the House today itself. TMC’s Sushmita Dev tweeted, “It is so unfortunate to see the peace being dismantled for raw power by the BJP.” 14 civilians and a soldier died in the Mon district of Nagaland after an Army operation went totally wrong.
