The latest work of Colombian sculptor Doris Salcedo – an anti-war memorial built using the melted down metal of 37 tonnes of weapons – was unveiled on Monday, December 10. Known as 'Fragments', the monument pays tribute to the lives lost in the country's civil war, which left 260,000 dead and over 7 million displaced. It is being featured at a gallery space a block from the presidential palace in Bogota.“The idea was to take the weapons which have caused so much pain and turn them into something useful,” Salcedo said to the Guardian.
